I always will remember his intense concentration and kavana in his tefillah, especially Shmoneh Esrei. At the Shabbos meals he just loved to sing the Carlebach niggunim. His favorite melody was "Kol haolam kulo gesher tzar me’od, ve-haikar lo lefached kla," meaning "This world is just but a narrow bridge and there is nothing to fear." He would start singing in a very low melodious voice, which would get louder and stronger as he repeated those words with such emotion from the depth of his neshama, getting all present at the table to join in with him.

It was apparent to me that he loved all Jews even though he was a Bobover chassid with a streimel. Rabbi Teitelbaum, who used to sit opposite him at the Shabbos table, would be enthralled by his chaver’s sweet voice and join in as well with all the niggunim. It so happens that I grew up in Far Rockaway, NY, where I davened in Kehilas Yaakov by the Sulitzer Rebbi, the grandfather of Rabbi Teitlebaum, and where my parents still daven. I am sure that both kedoshim gave their lives while singing "ve-ha-ikar lo le-fached klal.”

Hashem yinakem damam…

Responding To Mumbia

Amazing!! Among them was a special yungerman, R’ Bentzion Kruman Hy”d of Bat Yam, Israel, whose father, ybl”c R’ Chaim (Barry) Kruman, was born in Chicago.

Chaim’s mother, whose maiden was Magnes, was one of three sisters. One of her sisters married Rav Chaim Zimmerman, the famed rosh yeshiva of Yeshiva Beis Medrash L’Torah in Chicago. The second married R’ Pinchos Shain, a brother of R’ Tzadok Shaingarten, a Chicago baal habayis, who was part of a chaburah of baalei batim who were talmidei chachomim from Mir-Shanghai. The third son-in-law was Mr. Joe Kruman. A simple American baal habayis who kept his shul, Bais Yitzchok of Albany Park, going for a number of years after the neighborhood went under, Mr. Kruman sent his son Chaim to Telshe Yeshiva in Chicago for high school.

Chaim eventually left Chicago and went to learn in Yeshivas Rabbeinu Chaim Berlin. From there he went to Eretz Yisroel, where he eventually settled in Kiryat Bobov in Bat Yam. He has been in Eretz Yisroel for over 30 years ago and all of his 10 children were born there.

What is noteworthy as relates to the recent tragedy is the following.
Chaim Kruman was in America this past week, having traveled in to attend the wedding of a son of the Bobover Rabbi Thursday night in Brooklyn. Chaim then traveled to Chicago on Friday to visit his mother for Shabbos. When Chaim left Boro Park, the situation in Mumbai was very much in the air. He was pretty sure that his son, R’ Bentzion, was in the doomed building, but was unsure, like everyone else, whether his son had been able to escape from the building. At that point, all information and details were sketchy.

While Chaim’s plane was in the air on the way to Chicago, reports came in that the raid on the Chabad House in Mumbai had been completed and that none of the hostages - including R’ Bentzion - had survived. The family called a Chicago acquaintance to meet Chaim at the airport. This person was nervous about the encounter with Chaim, having to break the news to him that his dear son did not survive, so he called one of the choshuveh rabbonim in Chicago to accompany him to give chizuk to the bereaved father.

They arrived at the airport and met Chaim. He asked them a host of questions and then requested to use a cell phone. Chaim called his family in Eretz Yisroel and they told him that although nothing was going to be confirmed until after Shabbos, it appeared that there were no survivors. (Later, just before Shabbos, officials from the American Embassy in India contacted him to tell him that his son, who he had last seen just six days earlier in Eretz Yisroel, was among the victims.)
Chaim put his head down and pinched the bridge of his nose for a couple of minutes. He turned white as a ghost.

He had lost his precious son.
Life would never be the same again.
He was very much tzutumult while he was accompanied to pick up his luggage.
What was there to say?

Rabbi Benzion Kruman Was Murdered—But We Are All Victims!

Last week’s terror attacks in Mumbai hit the Jewish world like a gunshot to the heart. We reeled in shock and pain, and trembled in fear and angst, as we waited for news and hoped to greet survivors. But as the story unfolded and details emerged, we recoiled in horror.

The six kedoshim murdered in the attack were tortured horrifically. One doctor who examined the victims post-mortem said, “of all the bodies, the Israeli victims bore the maximum torture marks.” There is no rational explanation for such treatment—and in fact, no rational explanation for the inclusion of India’s Chabad House in the terrorist’s plan. The nondescript building did not come close in grandeur or fame to the landmark Taj Mahal Hotel; nor was it a major thoroughfare, such as the Victoria train station. It was chosen only because it represented the Jewish people.

As such, the victims are not just those who were in the Nariman House on Wednesday evening. We are all victims—every Jew, everywhere. It is a chilling thought. It is also a great responsibility. It is up to us to ease the pain of those who suffered most.

But there is a small measure of comfort in the pain. Clearly, the terrorists could not determine the success of their venture. Only the Almighty could orchestrate events, and determine mi yichyeh u’mi yamus—who would live and who would die. The victims, and those who survived, clearly were destined to be where they were at the fateful moment, for reasons beyond human comprehension. Likewise, we were destined to hear their stories, learn their lessons, and act upon them.

Rabbi Benzion Kruman, Hy”d, of Bat Yam, Israel, was clearly chosen from Above to be a korban tzibbur, a holy sacrifice. Rabbi Kruman arrived at Chabad House shortly before the attacks. He was scheduled to leave India that evening, and came to the Chabad House before his flight, to daven Minchah and take leave of the Holtzbergs. He was found, obviously tortured, amongst the other kedoshim. Zaka volunteers and others who entered the building after Indian commandoes cleared it are not disclosing the exact nature of the torture, but it is clear that he suffered greatly.

The timing of his trip is remarkable. Rabbi Kruman, a kashrus supervisor, had initially planned to travel to India several weeks earlier. He postponed his trip, apparently because he could not get a visa.

Rabbi Benzion Kruman, 27, was known and beloved in Bat Yam as a Torah scholar and baal chesed. He was an alumnus of the Bobover Yeshiva in Kiryat Bobov, Bat Yam; and of the Tchebiner Yeshiva. His warmth and kindness extended to all, and he took great joy in helping others. Although he worked for many hours each day, he would let nothing interfere with his evening learning session. Rabbi Benzion was especially dedicated to his young family—his wife and three little children.

As a kashrus supervisor, Rabbi Kruman endured long absences from his family, difficult flights, and trips to exotic environments, where kosher food and amenities were difficult to find. In this way, he served the Jewish people; braving difficulties, to ensure a high level of kashrus in the community. Now the community he served is left to take his place.

We must ask ourselves what we were chosen to do. Clearly, the attack was meant to shake our equanimity; to rattle our collective conscience, and bring us to repentance. And clearly, as part of our teshuvah, we must ensure the future of Rabbi Kruman’s orphans—a four and a half year old, a toddler, and a newborn infant.

The Kruman children will probably never remember their wonderful father. But when they are grown, they will learn about his shocking brutal death, al Kiddush Hashem. They will learn that he was tortured; that his blood was spilled, only because he was a Jew. And they will hear that the entire world prayed and wept for him and for them, his young orphans, for days. Some of the things they will hear will haunt them, as they haunt us today. But we can hope that they will be comforted when they hear of the Jewish world’s response to their tragedy.

As part of that response, the community has formed the Kruman Foundation, to support Rabbi Benzion’s widow and orphans. The fund is led by prominent rabbis and leaders including the renowned Professor Aaron Twerski; noted psychologist and author, Dr. Abraham Twerski; Rabbi Fabian Schonfeld, rabbi of Young Israel of Kew Garden Hills; Rabbi Berish Goldenberg of Los Angeles, Rabbi Yechiel Kaufman, rav of the Sefardishe Shul in Boro Park, and others. Rabbonim urge the community to send generous contributions to the fund. All contributions are tax-deductible.

The attack in Mumbai will go down in the annals of Jewish history, and the martyred victims will take their place amongst the millions of kedoshim who gave their lives al Kiddush Hashem. As a people who fight hatred with love and cruelty with compassion, we can hope that our response will bring about the ultimate salvation, when all tears will be dried, and the dead will rise to greet Moshiach.

Please make checks payable to Chasdei Shloime, and mail to the Kruman Foundation c/o Rabbi Aron Twerski, 1444 38 Street Brooklyn, N.Y. 11218 or at www.krumanfoundation.org.

By Frimet Blum
www.5tjt.com/

More Pictures Of The Lavaya

My Nephew, Benzi Chroman

by Mordecai Alexander

He will never become a statistic to his family.

There is no greater pain than the loss of a child.

Our family cannot fathom the pain and sorrow of my brother-in-law, Chaim Ber, his wife Elka, and the nine married siblings of Benzi. There are no words we can find in our hearts to comfort them.

When we read and hear about terrorist attacks against our Jewish brothers and sisters - whether it be in
He was chosen - along with the other kedoshim - as a kapara for our entire Jewish nation.
Jerusalem or Tel Aviv, London or Mumbai - our pain and sorrow are usually short-lived, often not lasting the day. Although we are Torah Jews and we know these are not random acts of fate, but messages from HaShem, most of us just continue with our daily lives. The hundreds of names of victims of terror are no longer actual brutally murdered children or grandchildren, but become grim statistics that molder in newspaper archives and Internet memory banks.

Benzi will never become a statistic to his wife and children, his parents or his siblings. For reasons beyond our microscopic understanding, he was chosen - along with the other kedoshim - as a kapara for our entire Jewish nation. Yet, none of this will comfort my brother-in-law and his wife, who bury their child but can never bury their pain.

There is much talk in the religious media and on the Internet about the need for unity and peace among all Jews worldwide. There is a slowly emerging universal awakening about the unacceptably high price of machloket and sinat chinam among Jews - not only between different groups of Jews, but even in the midst of religious Jews in the same community, and sometimes on the same block.

The horrors of Mumbai, the terrible carnage inflicted on our Jewish brothers and sisters by Muslim animals disguised as humans, cannot hold the world’s attention more than a few days at most. The world will move on and most of us will continue with our daily routine of life, perhaps less secure in our world, praying that our governments will be able to stop the next terrorist attack and prevent more bloodshed.
The pain will never go away.

But Benzi is gone forever, and the pain of his father and mother will never go away. We grieve with them, and all of Israel will share their sorrow and express their sympathy; yet most of us will move on with our lives. Chaim Ber and Elka, the parents of Benzi, will never forget and never stop feeling the pain of a lost child.

They will be comforted by the outpour of worldwide support of Klal Yisrael, and will arise from their period of mourning and see much nachas from Benzi’s three children and their other precious grandchildren. HaShem will give them the strength to find meaning for their loss and perhaps eventually help others in their sorrow.

But the pain will never go away.

Titnachamu min hashamayim.

Please donate NOW at www.krumanfoundation.org

Just Received this Letter From A Friend Of Benzion

Mumbai.

It seems so far away, so so far away. Yet last week it was just next door.

I knew one of the murdered victims from yeshiva. Bentzion Kruman. He was a sweet soul. He was a gentle soul. Why? WHY?

What is the rationale behind killing an innocent man or woman? What is gained?!?

What kind of world are we living in??

A human life being ripped away is very, very sad. Knowing and having been touched by that human being makes it all the more poignant.

Bentzi, you had so much more to offer this world! Your wife needs you! Your children need you! Your parents need you! Your friends need you! And yet you are gone.

Due to no fault of your own. But rather to the blind insane hatred that was visited upon you that dreadful day.

We wonder, did you know that you were not going to walk out of there alive? Did you at least have a feeling of false hope? Were you hungry? Thirsty? I'm sure you were worried about your family, but did you really think that they would never see you again??

Did the monsters taunt you? Did they allow you the dignity of being a human being in your final hours? When the Malach Hamoves came for you did it hurt? Did you feel the pain?

We are crying. Our eyes have ceased to shed tears as we watched your young son say Kaddish yet we are crying. We are weeping.

Our hearts are broken.

Klal Yosroel is broken

The world is broken.
Jews murdered in Mumbai's Chabad House were tortured first

Mumbai hospital doctors were horrified by the condition of the six Israeli bodies recovered from the smashed, blood-spattered rooms of Chabad Center Monday. Local and Israeli pathologists confirmed they were tortured by their Islamist terrorist captors before being bound together and killed in cold blood.
DEBKAfile adds: Israelis were the largest group of foreigners murdered by the Islamist terrorists. The single captured gunman confirmed they had been specifically targeted. The six bodies were flown home by an Israeli Air Force plane and are being laid to rest Tuesday in their home towns in state ceremonies.
Laid to rest Tuesday, Dec. 2 in state ceremonies in six Israeli towns are Norma Schwartzblatt-Rabinovitz, 50, from Mexico, who was due to immigrate to Israel and two of whose children already live there; the center's director Rabbi Gavriel Holtzberg, 29, and his wife Rivka, 26; Ms Yocheved Harpaz, 59, mother of four from Givatayim; Betzion Chroman, 28, father of three, who held dual US-Israeli citizenship, and Leibisch Teitelbaum, father of 8, an American from Brooklyn.
Israel's president, political leaders, rabbis and tens of thousands of mourners attended the eulogies for the dead at Kfar Chabad near Tel Aviv and their funerals. Rivka Holtzberg was six months pregnant. Her two-year old child, Moshe Holtzberg, was saved by his Indian nanny who fled the building with him in her arms. He was found later to be covered in bruises from a beating.
An Indian doctor, who conducted the post-mortem of the victims in Mumbai, said: "Of all the bodies, the Israeli victims bore the maximum torture marks. It was clear that they were killed on the 26th itself (the first day of the Islamist terrorist attack). It was obvious that they were tied up and tortured before they were killed. It was so bad that I do not want to go over the details even in my head again."
"Bombay has a long history of terror. I have seen bodies of riot victims, gang war and previous terror attacks like bomb blasts. But this was entirely different. It was shocking and disturbing," a doctor said.
Asked what was different about the victims of the incident, another doctor said: "It was very strange. I have seen so many dead bodies in my life, and was yet traumatized. A bomb blast victim's body might have been torn apart and could be a very disturbing sight. But the bodies of the victims in this attack bore such signs about the kind of violence of urban warfare that I am still unable to put my thoughts to words," he said.
At the Mumbai synagogue, members of the Jewish community, Israeli diplomats and visitors gathered Monday for a memorial for Rabbi Gavriel Holtzman and his wife Rivka, directors of the Chabad Center which provided a home from home for Israelis and Jews visiting India. Their two-year old son, rescued by his Indian nanny, cried for his parents. His nanny, Sandra, travelled to Israel with the child and his grandparents.

A link in our family's chain is broken, victim's brother sobs

"These were indescribable days," Yehoshua Chroman said of the period since his 28-year-old brother Bentzion's death in the Mumbai terror assault last week.

Bentzion left behind a 24-year-old wife, Emuna, and three children, the oldest just five years old, the youngest barely three months.

Speaking at the Bobov Yeshiva in Bat Yam, where Chroman had studied, Yehoshua called on his lost brother to help the family through the difficult time ahead.

"You left us here without you. You left your young wife alone," he said between sobs. "Don't forget them. Be with them always. Remember us.

"We will need a lot of strength. A link in our family's chain is broken, so we'll have to hold on to each other harder."

At the gathering of over a hundred members of the Bobov hassidic community, local rabbis and friends spoke of a "sweet, smart boy."

To the sound of weeping, neighborhood rabbi Yaakov Rojza recalled knowing Bentzion "since he was eight years old. He was such a smart and charismatic child. We're going to bury him today. How do you bury such a sweet child so soon?"

"I met him at prayers," said neighbor Moshe Yaronsky, who recalled he was always "a smiling, gentle man."

A yeshiva friend and member of the ZAKA team who went to Mumbai to collect the bodies recalled "entering Chabad House on Saturday night. It was like a nightmare.

"When I saw you [Bentzion] I couldn't look at you. We took your passport and identification card from your pocket. We shouted out Shema Yisrael.

"I want to apologize to you, Bentzi, if we missed a bit of blood. It was such hard work."

A dual US-Israeli citizen, Bentzion worked as a kashrut supervisor for the New York-based Volover Rebbe, Rabbi Nahum Ephraim Teitelbaum, the father of fellow victim Aryeh Leibish Teitelbaum.

He was in India for a plant inspection and was on his way home to Israel when he visited the Mumbai Chabad House, said friends. The terrorists attacked the building, known locally as Nariman House, shortly after he arrived.
Speakers at the memorial ceremony said he was beloved by those he worked with.
"He did his work intelligently, beautifully," said Rojza. "No one was ever angry with him. He sanctified God's name among the Gentiles he worked with."

"There is no filling the vacuum left behind here in Bobov," said another speaker.
Yehoshua told the gathering that Bentzi had planned to end his work travels, which were taking a toll on his family.
"Before he left for India, Bentzi said, 'this is the last time I travel. I can't bear to leave the kids like this.' But he needed to make a living, to support his family."

"I never believed that a brother has to accompany his younger brother to his funeral," added Yehoshua. "How do I go to a funeral of someone so young, a brother who barely started his life?
"But we have no questions or complaints for God," he insisted in a broken voice.

As they escorted the body of the young man into a ZAKA van that took it for burial to Petah Tikva, Chroman's mother and wife wailed, "we love you, Bentzi."

The blood of Mumbai’s kedoshim will never be forgotten!

Dear Friend,

Last week’s attacks in Mumbai hit the Jewish world like a gunshot to the heart. The hatred; the brutality; the viciousness were in no way directed only at the innocent souls in India’s Chabad House. They were directed at every Jew in every corner of the world.
The terrorists were given clear directives. They were to target Americans, Britons, and Jews. And though the murderers spared no mercy for any of their victims, they reserved their most brutal treatment for the Jews. Doctors who examined the Chabad House victims post mortem were astounded at the extent of the torture they had obviously endured.
One doctor said, “It was very strange. I have seen so many dead bodies in my life, and was yet traumatized. A bomb blast victim’s body might have been torn apart and could be a very disturbing sight, but the bodies of the victims in this attack bore such signs about the kind of violence of urban warfare that I am still unable to put my thoughts to words.”
In truth, no one can adequately put to words the pain we suffer today. And when the Jewish people are left without words, they must turn to actions.
I am asking you to act on behalf of one of the victims – Rabbi Benzion Kruman of Bat Yam, Israel, and help create a fund to support his family.
Rabbi Kruman, 28, went to Mumbai as a kosher supervisor. As such, he was away from home much of the time. He endured lengthy flights to countries around the world, subsisted on canned food, and braved often-hostile environments – all so that his fellow Jews would have kosher food. He dedicated his life to the Jewish people - and he gave his life as its representative. He was killed only because he was a Jew.
Now the Jewish people must take his place, and ensure the future and wellbeing of his young wife and three children.
The children are very young – and may never remember their wonderful father. But they will learn about his sacrifice – details of which are only beginning to emerge.
 They will hear that their father gave his life al Kiddush Hashem, in shul, as he prayed the Mincha service.
 They will hear that their father was tortured and gunned down in cold blood, with senseless brutality and hatred.
 And they will hear that the shots that were fired at their father were truly shots heard round the world – that all the world wept for him and for them, his orphaned children.
Let the children hear one more thing. Let them hear that they were never for a moment abandoned to their fate as orphans – that the Jewish people fought hatred with love; and cruelty with compassion. Let them hear that together we mourned, and together we rose to ensure their futures.
Under the leadership and guidance of esteemed leaders of the Jewish community, we have formed the Kruman Foundation, to support the widow and orphans of Rabbi Benzion Kruman. We urge you to demonstrate your solidarity, and to take action in this terrible time, by sending a large contribution to the foundation. This is the Jewish response to tragedy. Please send as much as you can, today.
Sincerely,

P.S. As this letter goes to print, the bodies of the kedoshim, the holy martyrs, are being flown to Israel for burial. The Kruman children will not greet the smiling father they loved. Instead, they will greet his bullet-riddled tortured body, and escort him on his final journey. Your contribution today will not ease their pain today, because nothing – nothing in the world – can comfort them in face of such raw sorrow. But it will bring them peace of mind in the future.

Make your Donations here www.krumanfoundation.org

Reb Bentzion Chroman HY”D

The residents of Kiryas Bobov in Bat Yam are having difficult accepting the painful news, that the young avreich, R’ Bentzion Chroman is no longer with them. He too was among the victims in the Mumbai Chabad House, a mashgiach for the Volover Rebbe of Boro Park Shlita. He is survived by a wife and three children, with the oldest being 3.5 and the youngest 3 months.

Bentzi as he was known, was a popular figure, someone who friends explain “got along with everyone”.

Bentzi was named after Rav Bentzion of Bobov HY”D ZY”A. His father is a pillar of Torah, and Bentzi was raised in a home where learning was not just a daytime activity. His mother toils to ensure her husband is permitted to continue occupying the halls of the beis medresh.

He was educated in his early years in Bobov Yeshiva in Bat Yam and from there to Yeshiva Kochav Yaakov. He was married in 5762 to the daughter of Rav Dovid Levin of Ganei Tikvah. Shortly after their wedding they settled in Bat Yam, near Bentzi’s parents.

The young couple decided not to burden the parents, and they purchased their home with their own funds, and Bentzi then entered into the kashrus world, deciding to be self-sufficient, not wishing to place the burden of supporting his family on anyone else.

This however did not bring an end to his limudim, and he had a late night shiur and was a regular occupant of the large Bobov beis medresh in Bat Yam during the nighttime hours.

Of late, it was known that he added to his daily learning seder and he was in the beis medresh until the very late hours of the night. During the last yomim noraim, friends commented on the intensity of his tefillos.

His last visit to India was delayed over and over again due to difficulties pertaining to his visa. Last motzei Shabbos he finally left, and was scheduled to return on Wednesday. He packed up his belongings in the hotel and headed to the Mumbai Chabad House to say goodbye to Rav Gavriel and Rebbitzin Rivka, to daven and to thank them for their hospitality. It appears the terrorists arrived shortly after him – and it is believed he tried to run for his life. His body was found on the fifth floor, shot at point blank range.

A website has been established as well. Click HERE to donate.
